To complement the knife’s tactical mission, Cold Steel gave the Recon 1 a tough, black Teflon finish, which gives the blade three major tactical advantages. First, it helps the blade resist rust. Second, it eliminates glare and light reflections, which otherwise might give the user away. And third, Teflon is a superior lubricant, which causes the blade to slip through even tough material with markedly less friction. This means you can cut deeper and far longer than with the non-Teflon coated blade. Cold Steel also added a thumb disc and extra-strong pocket clip, making the Recon 1 easy to open and carry. The clip is completely ambidextrous, and its small size is designed to keep the palm comfortable under protracted use. Kershaw’s SpeedSafe assisted opening system helps you to smoothly open the knife with a manual push on the blade’s thumb stud or Index-Open system. SpeedSafe’s torsion bar helps keep the knife closed, preventing it from being opened by accident. In order to open the knife, apply manual pressure to the thumb stud to overcome the resistance of the torsion bar. After the blade is out of the handle, the torsion bar moves along its track and takes over. The blade opens smoothly and locks into position, ready for use.
